Red Started out selling newspapers on the street of his hometown of Vicennes Indiana. At the age of 10 or was it 12 he dropped out school and went on the road with Doc Lewis's Medicine Show to "Fall off the stage" and sell "Snake Oil".  He worked in Vaudeville, Burlesque, on Showboats, and as a circus clown. Performed at Carnegie Hall and on the Broadway Stage. Was a star on Radio, TV and on the Big Screen (between 1938 and 1965 in over 30 films).

In 20 years on television his shows ("The Red Skelton Show" NBC 1951-53, CBS 1953-62 and "The Red Skelton Hour" CBS 1962-70) were never out of the top 20 and was #5 when canceled.  CBS thought his vintage act of pratfalls, one-liners and characterizations (Freddie the Freeloader, Clem Kadiddlehopper, the Mean Widdle Kid, boxer Cauliflower McPugg, drunken Wille Lump-Lump, Sheriff Dead Eye, the two cross-eyed seagulls Gertrude and Heathcliffe and more) did not appeal to younger viewers. As for me it was the one night I could stay up past bedtime.  Red often said that he didn't "think anybody should have to pay money at the box office to hear what they can read on restroom walls."

Some of his movies were "Having Wonderful Time" 1938; "Whistling In The Dark" 1941; "Ship Ahoy" 1942; "I Dood It" 1943; "Ziegfield Follies" 1946; "The Fuller Brush Man" 1948; "A Southern Yankee" 1948; "Three Little Words" 1950; "The Clown" 1953; "Around the World In 80 Days" 1956; "Ocean's Eleven" 1960; And "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" 1965.

May he live forever in the hearts and funny bones of us all!
Richard "Red" Skelton, 18 July 1913 - 17 Sept 1997
